Ellen DeGeneres is said to have lost three years of her career.

It's been 25 years since the legendary talk show host made a daring step by coming out in an episode of her comedy "Ellen."

The episode, "The Puppy Episode," was taped in front of a live audience on April 30, 1997, and not only did she publicly come out as homosexual, but her character on the ABC program did as well.

On Thursday's broadcast of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," she told the audience that she was commemorating the silver jubilee by reflecting on her life, per People magazine.

In her opening monologue, DeGeneres stated, "When I came out, they warned me that it would wreck my career, and they were correct for a bit."

"Actually, I lost my job for precisely three years. But take a look at me now."

Before being praised and cheered by the crowd, the "Finding Dory" voice actor also emphasized the significance of accepting and appreciating individuals for being their real selves.

She went on to remark, "When I was a youngster, I didn't see many individuals who looked like me on television - except for Peppermint Patty, of course. I knew as soon as I saw those practical shoes. The inventor said she wasn't a lesbian, but come on."

While Ellen DeGeneres was encouraged by how far humans have progressed since then, she is hopeful that they will continue to improve.

She told her wife, Portia De Rossi, that the only time she is in the closet these days is when they play hide and seek.

The pair had been married since 2008, when same-sex weddings became legally permissible in California.

DeGeneres then expressed gratitude to the crowd and viewers for their unwavering support.

Ellen DeGeneres's Dark Side

While Ellen DeGeneres may be seen as a role model for the LGBTQ+ community, a flaw in her show was revealed in 2020.

Several reports alleged that while she was under COVID quarantine, she hired a non-union crew to tape her program while her employees was kept in the dark about their employment' status.

The studio behind her program has also begun an investigation into complaints of racism, bullying, and sexual misconduct on the set.

Several others have also accused DeGeneres of being "mean" and "vile."

As a result, DeGeneres' program was canceled after more than 3,000 episodes.
