Prime Video has unleashed a new trailer for their new prequel series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, from the franchise which gained notoriety after director Peter Jackson wowed the world with the original trilogy based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien.

According to the official synopsis:

"Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

"Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone."

To be honest, after the gross misstep with The Hobbit films, we can only hope that this might garner favor with fans once again. But let's not hold our breath. The trailer plays as a slow, meandering look at Middle-Earth before the Rings of Power corrupted its denizens, showcasing landscapes and characters set to a droning, less than exciting score. Peppered in, we are given a couple battle scenes, a quick glance at Gollum, and a slew of random characters we are given very little to care about unless you are a hardcore fan.

Yes, this harsh reading of the trailer might be a tad presumptuous, but again, so much of the magic that was the original films feels lost to time, with its amazing practical costumes and sets. Nothing about this new series feels like a standout that can be saved by more half baked CGI and lackluster characters. Remember, the first films were made around TWENTY years ago and look better then than they do now. We'll just have to wait and see and here's hoping this can be something worth watching.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to stream on Prime Video beginning on September 2nd.
