Princess Diana almost became the first royal to follow an exiled member's move in the past.

Before Megxit happened, King Edward VIII's exit from the monarchy to marry the American divorcée, Wallis Simpson, sparked a damaging buzz. So when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left their senior royal posts, they received an insurmountable amount of condemnation from the public and royal fans.

However, Princess Diana's bodyguard revealed that the late royal almost did the same when she was still alive.

Princess Diana Almost Left Prince William, Prince Harry

On Tuesday, Lee Sansum released his book "Protecting Diana: A Bodyguard's Story" in which he revealed what led Princess Diana to plan to leave for the US.

Sansum was part of the security team who looked after Princess Diana and her sons. He was also with them when they vacationed to St. Tropez in July 1997.

Unfortunately, the supposed peaceful outing was ruined by paparazzi who tried to take pictures of the Princess of Wales and her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed.

"She said to me, 'There is nothing I can do in the UK. The papers there attack me no matter what I do.' Then she told me, 'I want to go to the US and live there so I can get away from it all. At least in America they like me and will leave me alone,'" Sansum said, per Page Six.

The former bodyguard recalled asking Princess Diana if her sons would come with her. The late royal then told him that it would never be possible to take them with her.

Thus, she planned to see them in their school holidays instead once she relocated to the US.

But Princess Diana planned to leave them to save her sons from too much spotlight.

Sansum described her as a loving mother who wanted her sons to be away from the press that bothered her every single day of her life.

A few days since the holiday started, she reportedly insisted that she would tell everyone that was leaving the UK for good. Although she was able to get out of the yacht, she was never able to tell them about her plans.

The paparazzi also led to her death the following month when she tried to outrun photographers. The terrifying car accident killed her alongside Dodi and his driver, Henri Paul.
