Lindsey Vonn's mother, Linda Krohn (some news outlets reported as Lindy Anne Lund), died.

Vonn confirmed the tragic news in a heartfelt Instagram post, saying that her mother passed away peacefully while she held her hand. The Olympian uploaded photos of them together to celebrate her mother's life and mourn her death at the same time alongside the text, "Lindy Anne Lund Mom 1942-2022."

In the same post, she disclosed that Krohn died exactly a year after she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

"I am so grateful for every moment I had with her but I am also thankful that she is no longer suffering and in peace. She was a shining light that will never fade and I will forever be inspired by her," she captioned the post.

A representative also confirmed the news to PEOPLE on Saturday, expressing how devastating the health issue is as no one has found a cure to it yet.

The spokesperson for the Olympian also said that Vonn aims to learn more about ALS and spread additional awareness globally.

According to the ALS Association, the disease is a progressive issue that affects a patient's nerve cells in their spinal cord and brain. Since it degenerates the nerve cells and muscles, ALS can eventually lead to the hardening of the area.

Following the news, Vonn's fans and colleagues sent her heartfelt messages as she and her family dealt with the dark time in their lives.

Lindsey Vonn Honored Mom Months Before Her Death

Before Vonn ultimately lost her mother, she paid tribute to her through the speech she delivered during her induction into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame.

In June, Krohn heard a heartfelt message from her daughter while sitting with the audience at the ceremony.

At that time, Vonn said she would like to dedicate the milestone to her mother who taught her about having the strength and maintaining character at all times. She also acknowledged that she became her inspiration to win over her battles in life.

Before her ALS diagnosis, Krohn suffered a stroke while giving birth to Vonn. The event caused her to suffer minor paralysis in her left leg and permanently left her to walk with a limp. In fact, it reportedly affected her chances of seeing her ski races during the early days of her career.

Vonn also told PBS "NewsHour" in January that her mother always gave her an overwhelming level of positivity which helped her as an athlete.
