The long-awaited Season 2 release of the hit South Korean survival drama series "Squid Game" is scheduled to happen this year, more than two years after the Netflix show debuted in September 2021.

On Tuesday, Netflix confirmed through a letter to its shareholders that "Squid Game" Season 2 will premiere this 2024.

"Looking ahead, despite last year's strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024," Netflix stated in the letter.

"Audiences will be able to choose from hit returning dramas like 'The Diplomat' S2, 'Bridgerton' S3, 'Squid Game' S2 and 'Empress' S2," the company added.

However, the shows' exact release dates have yet to be announced.

 

Gong Yoo, who played the role of The Salesman in Season 1, will be back in "Squid Game's" new installment alongside Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun and Wi Ha-joon.

Meanwhile, new actors have been added to the cast, including Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-wook, Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P), Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an.

Netizens could not keep their excitement after the new update on "Squid Game" Season 2 was announced.

"I'm going to need a date, so I can set an alarm, and host a costume party," one X user quipped.

"[This is] huge! [I] can't wait to see what they will do with S2," tweeted another.

"[I'm] very excited for this. They did a great job with the characters, plot and twists. Looking forward to this next one that expands on this crazy world," commented a third user.

 

"Squid Game" debuted on Netflix on Sep. 17, 2021, and became the streaming service's first series to surpass 100 million members at launch after clocking over 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days and reaching 111 million accounts, per Deadline.

It also reportedly remains the most-watched series on Netflix ever.

The series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk follows the story of 456 players and the secret contest they risked their lives in for a chance to take home the 45.6 billion KRW prize money.
