Anna Wintour is widely known for her iconic looks, including none other than her oversized sunglasses, but she was spotted out without them in Paris.

Wintour, 74, was seen leaving the Valentino show during Haute Couture week without wearing her legendary shades, although they were still held tightly in her hands.

According to the media executive, she has good reason to keep the oversized shades close.

"They are seriously useful," she said in an interview with '60 Minutes.' "I can sit in a show and if I am bored out of my mind, nobody will notice... at this point, they have become, really, armor."

In an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour, the art director said she finds eyewear "incredibly useful because you avoid people knowing what you're thinking about."

"They help me when I'm feeling a bit tired or sleepy and maybe they've just become a crutch in part of who I am. But today I really did need them. I'll be brutally frank", she continued, "I have been unbelievably ill all week. And, plus, I just had eye surgery, so those are the real reasons I'm wearing them today."

Wintour's sunglasses were also the topic of a recent layoffs at Conde Nast.

On Jan. 17, Conde Nast announced that its music publication, 'Pitchfork,' would merge with its men's magazine, 'GQ.' This decision led to many layoffs for Pitchfork, including around 270 employees or around 5% of staff according to Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast.

A former 'Pitchfork' employee expressed her disappointment in the layoff, mentioning Wintour's sunglasses.

The trailblazer was also the inspiration for the comedy/drama film 'The Devil Wears Prada' (2006.) Meryl Streep portrayed Miranda Priestly, a no-nonense fashion editor who production said was "not a direct caricature" of Wintour.

Anne Hathaway played Andrea Sachs. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci rounded out the star-studded cast.
