Comedian Chris Rock caused a Twitter storm with his controversial 4th of July tweet. Rock tweeted: "Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren't free but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks."

The tweet sparked backlash against the comedian, with blogger Jeff Schreiber tweeting back: "Slavery existed for 2000yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100yrs. We now have a black POTUS."

Luckyjoe tweeted: "No more of your movies anymore QT @chrisrock: Happy white peoples independence day the slaves werent free but Im sure they enjoyed fireworks."

Another blogger, David Burge, tweeted: "Good one! I bet your Guatemalan house staff got a good chuckle."

Chris Rock has not responded to the comments.

While many have deemed Rock's tweet as unpatriotic, some have come to defend him. Comedian and activist Elon James White tweeted: "I just wanna ask everyone who's mad at @ChrisRock--Is he wrong? IS. HE. WRONG?"

Rock was voted as the 5th greatest stand-up comedian of all time in the US by Comedy Central. He was a former cast member of Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. He also produced and narrated "Everybody Hates Chris". a comedy series based on his school days.
