"Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Channing Tatum are pleased to announce that they are expecting the birth of their first child next year," the actor's rep told Us Weekly.

"It was a total surprise," a source close to the couple added.

The source also revealed that the "Magic Mike" star plans to take a year off from shooting movies to be with his spouse. When Dewan-Tatum, 32, was asked in January if there were plans to star a family with her husband, she told the magazine, "I would hope so!"

"I just don't know when," she added. "When it's meant to be, it will happen."

Tatum was named People's "2012 Sexiest Man Alive" in November. Despite the success of portraying a stripper in a semi-autobiographical tale "Magic Mike, Tatum was still shocked and humbled by the honor.

"My first thought was, 'Y'all are messing with me,' " said Tatum.

The Alabama native told People that he and his wife can't wait to start their family.

"I'm ready; I think she's ready," said the 32-year-old. "The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we'll see where we go after that. It's really easy for us guys to say, 'I want like 15 kids. Jenna will be like, 'Well you better get another wife!' "

The couple met on the set of "Step Up" in 2006 and married in 2009. On Sunday, Dec. 16, Dewan-Tatum attended the taping for VH1's "Divas" live in Los Angeles. The actress hid her baby bump in a flowing light blue dress. The beautiful brunette walked the red carpet, stopped for interviews and was seen by onlookers holding her well disguised baby bump, E! Online reported.

Eyewitnesses revealed that she skipped alcohol, drank water and was seen chatting with George Clooney's girlfriend Stacy Keibler and "Bridesmaid" actress Ellie Kemper during the show's taping.
