They're the number one discount retailer in the U.S., but Walmart is still shutting down a grand total of 269 stores worldwide.

The company, which operates Wal-Mart stores, Wal-Mart Supercenters, Wal-Mart Express, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets, Sam's Clubs, and Amigo properties, will shutter locations that are within 10 miles of another property after reviewing the entire fleet of stores and choosing to close some locations to ensure better profitability.

"Actively managing our portfolio of assets is essential to maintaining a healthy business," CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. "Closing stores is never an easy decision. But it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future."

The company is reportedly working to ensure that workers will be placed in new stores at nearby locations not being shuttered. The store closures are scheduled to begin at the end of this month.
