Prince William submitted a formal notice with the Search and Rescue Force at Royal Air Force Valley in Wales and will officially leave his post around the time that his wife, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, is expected to give birth to the couple's first child.

A military source confirmed the news to Us Weekly regarding Prince William, 30, and his departure from the search and rescue job. The royal heir to the throne "will be making an announcement within the next month and leave RAF Valley around the time of the birth."

"William is ready to take on new challenges - as a royal and within the armed forces," the insider explained. '

When asked about Prince William's career plans, his press officer explained to the magazine, "The decision as to what the Duke will do once his current tour with the Search and Rescue Force comes to an end in late summer is still with the Duke himself."

Prince William and Middleton, 31, announced that they were expecting a baby on Dec. 3. She is due to give birth in July. The couple married in 2011 in a televised ceremony in England views by millions around the world.

While talking to a soldier at a St. Patrick's Day ceremony in March, Middleton revealed that she wants her first child to be a boy, but that her husband prefers his firstborn to be a girl. It was reported in the same month that Middleton may have slipped up and revealed that she is expecting a girl.

If the baby is born July 1, he or she will share a birthday with Prince William's late mother Princess Diana. Their child, whether boy or girl, could be monarch one day since he or she is the firstborn to the prince, who is second to the throne after his father Prince Charles. The child will be behind Prince William in the line of succession.
