Brad Pitt's new summer movie World War Z screened at a Hoboken, N.J. movie theater on Wednesday and much to the crowd's surprise and delight, the actor made an appearance at the event.

The actor came out to the late-night screening handling a load of promotional T-shirts, and said that he was behind bringing this film straight to the people instead of just the media and celebrity crowd he showed it off to earlier that evening.

"I said OK but we can't do it without showing it to the people we made the film for," Pitt stated emphatically to the adoring audience.

"We got to do a screening for the fans, so we decided there's no better place to do that than Jersey," he added, as Garden State fans whooped. "I know it's late, and we really appreciate it...Today we came out to show the film for the people we made it for-our fans."

The actor described his new flick as a "monster film," saying, "it's epic, it's scary as hell, and I guarantee you it's the most intense thing you're gonna see all summer."

At the earlier media screening, held at the Museum of Modern Art, Pitt was a bit more reserved in his presentation. He even suggested that he was "a little bit shy" about the project.

However, just as he won over the Jersey crowd, he won over the Hollywood crowd too. According to PEOPLE, actress pals Julianna Marguiles and Kyra Sedgwick discussed the film's nightmarish zombie attacks on the way to the film's after party. Bruce Willis and wife Emma Heming, Morgan Freeman, and Ashley Olsen were among the other guests in attendance.

Pitt, dressed in all black with slicked-back hair, appeared at ease even in the wake of partner Angelina Jolie's recent health scare. The actress announced her double mastectomy nearly two weeks ago.

World War Z is due to open in theaters on June 21.
