Wrestler John Cena is continuing to expand his acting resume. One role that he might portray is a video game icon.

Who Is Duke Nukem?

While casual video game fans can scream out the names of Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Master Chief off the top of their heads, only a few gaming aficionados might identify Duke Nukem if they see him in a lineup of video game characters.

Created in July 1991 by Apogee Software Ltd, Duke Nukem was designed to be stereotypes of action film characters that were portrayed by actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Sylvester Stallone.

The character made his debut in his self-titled video game, and his mission was to defend his fictional Earth from alien invaders. Throughout Nukem's mission to protect his world, he accumulates a vast arsenal of fancy weapons to help him in his quest.

The Duke Nukem franchise has included 19 video games including the core four games that shaped the franchise. Also, comic book publisher IDW Publishing produced several comic books series revolving around the character.

Nukem's Production Team

Cena and his team have entered talks with production company Platinum Dunes. The company is headed by action film veteran Michael Bay, who was recently nominated for several Golden Raspberry Awards for Transformers: The Last Knight.  Andrew Form and Brad Fuller co-own the company with Bay.

Paramount Pictures is expected to release Duke Nukem into a full-length film. As of this story's publishing, neither Paramount Pictures nor Platinum Dunes has announced the film's screenwriter or director. The companies also has not revealed when the Duke Nukem movie is expected to hit the theatres.

Cena The Actor

If Cena gets the part, the wrestler will continue to establish his career as a full-time actor. Cena has starred in several films including Trainwreck and the Daddy's Home franchise. He also provided his voice to several animated films such as when the WWE met The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo.

Cena also received strong reviews for the animated film Ferdinand, where he played the titular character. The film has done exceptionally well at the box office.

Cena The Wrestler

In addition to his acting endeavors, Cena continues to play an influential role in the World Wrestling Entertainment. Since he made his wrestling debut on the WWE in 2002, Cena has become a fan-favorite and created several memorable moments in franchise history.

From making his comeback at the 2016 WWE Championship to proposing to longtime girlfriend and fellow WWE wrestler Nikki Bella after the duo defeated the tag-team of The Miz and Maryse, Cena delivered moments that made WWE fans soar.

Currently, Cena is scheduled to host Nickelodeon's 2018 Kids Choice Awards for the second time on March 24, 2018.
