Rihanna celebrated her 30th birthday in style, wearing a spectacular "I Hate Rihanna" T-shirt. However, her ex, Chris Brown, threatened to spoil the day.

Totally Inappropriate

Brown wasted no time wishing the singer a happy birthday on social media, posting a message to her on Instagram almost the second the day began.

The move is more than a little inappropriate, given the couple's tumultuous history. They started dating back in 2008, though they had been friends since 2005 when they were both teenagers just getting their start in the music industry.

After about a year of being pop music's golden couple, the relationship took a significant turn in 2009 when Brown assaulted Rihanna the night before that year's Grammy Awards.

The issue caused major uproar worldwide when photos of Rihanna's bruised and battered face made the rounds online. In his heavily-criticized 2017 Netflix documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life, Brown spoke openly about the night in question.

The singer reasoned that the argument stemmed from Rihanna's jealousy over his past relationships. He admitted to violently hitting her, while the two were speeding along in the car.

Brown was ultimately charged with felony assault and making criminal threats. In June 2009, he pleaded guilty to the assault charge and accepted a plea deal. Rihanna was also awarded a five-year restraining order against Brown, preventing him from coming within 50 yards of the "Wild Thoughts" singer.

The couple reconciled in 2012 and even released the duet "Nobody's Business" together, which appeared on Rihanna's Unapologetic album. Brown has consistently argued that the incident is used against him by haters looking to hold his career back.

"As long as you're doing something good, people will always bring up old stuff or negative stuff because they don't want you to surpass a certain level or elevate," he said in 2014.

The reaction to Brown's birthday post was negative. Although some fans still ship the couple, most expressed disgust.

Trying To Win Her Back

Although it may seem hugely inappropriate to some, Brown's birthday shout out shouldn't come as too much of a shock. At the beginning of the month, he was quoted saying he would love to go on tour with Rihanna and Bruno Mars.

Neither Mars or Rihanna has responded, but an insider claimed Rihanna would never even consider the offer as the tour would have a negative impact on her career.

Brown has been trying to get back with Rihanna for years, according to a source close to the singer. He's been trying to figure out how to get her to talk to him again, but Rihanna has no plans of letting Brown back in because her family would not approve.

"If Rihanna ever spoke to Chris again, her family would lose it. Chris should move on," the source explained.

The singer has been most recently linked to billionaire Hassan Jameel, so Brown has his work cut out for him.
