Dearly departed TV chef Anthony Bourdain is honored with six posthumous Emmy nominations. Bourdain sadly took his own life just a month ago.

Celebrating His Work

His beloved CNN show Parts Unknown was honored when the nominees were announced on Thursday, five weeks following his death. Bourdain, who passed away on June 8, was personally honored with two nominations. His show earned six nominations in total.

Explore Parts Unknown, the digital tie-in, also earned a nod. Bourdain is nominated in the outstanding informational series or special category for his role as host and executive producer on the hit show. He was also nominated for his outstanding writing on a nonfiction program, for the show's episode on Southern Italy.

Parts Unknown itself was nominated for sound mixing, sound and picture editing, and its cinematography. The series found Bourdain traversing the globe in search of delicious meals, fascinating conversation with locals, and a deeper understanding of the area where he stayed for a particular week.

The chef's ability to communicate with, and understand, different cultures and peoples is primarily what earned the series praise and awards over the years. It received five Emmys, out of a total 31 nominations, and a Peabody Award during its run.

Bourdain took his own life at the age of 61 while on location in France, midway through shooting an episode of the show. Following his death, fellow chef, and frequent Parts Unknown traveling companion Eric Ripert remembered his pal as a wonderful storyteller who connected with people all over the world.

Parts Unknown's Netflix run was extended in the wake of the beloved chef's death.

A Very Private Struggle

News of Bourdain's death shocked fans all over the world. Jeff Zucker, president of CNN, released a statement at the time.

"Tony will be greatly missed not only for his work but also for the passion with which he did it," he said.

Bourdain's girlfriend, the actress Asia Argento, whom he collaborated with on Parts Unknown, took to social media to express her grief.

"Anthony gave all of himself in everything that he did. His brilliant, fearless spirit touched and inspired so many, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was my love, my rock, my protector. I am beyond devastated," she tweeted.

Even those closest to Bourdain were shocked by his suicide. His best friends claimed not to realize the depths of his pain. Actress Rose McGowan did note that the celebrity chef was struggling with some demons.

A source close to him revealed that Bourdain was overworked and the demise of a previous marriage had affected him deeply, though he was said to be happy with Argento.

The Emmy Awards will be given out on September 17.
