The latest sci-fi movie Pacific Rim is coming to theaters Friday and critics are raving about it.

While there are many movies of its kind, including the popular Transformers franchise, Pacific Rim is deemed entertaining and captivating by critics. The film focuses on an attack by enormous creatures that could potentially destroy Earth and the human race. In order to fight these rare aliens that emerge from the ocean, the humans create giant man-controlled robots called Jaegers.

The Hollywood Reporter in its Sunday review credited the movie with having "decent plot twists," as well as being "fun" and "smart."

"Unlike so many similar crash-bang action spectaculars, this one feels lean and muscular rather than bloated or padded; the combat is almost always coherent and dramatically pointed rather than just splashed on the screen for its own sake," the review also stated.

Other critics, including The Guardian, praised the movie's special effects, a lot of which has to do with the movie's noted big budget. The publication also gave kudos to the movie's director Guillermo del Toro.

"Pacific Rim is entirely in keeping with much expensively-made effects-heavy cinema of the present time: it's put together with such artistry and such devotion that it can't help but be impressive as a visual spectacle," The Guardian wrote in its Monday review.

The movie is considered eloquent and focused, according to The Verge. The website also said the movie has intriguing themes and an enjoyable narrative.

"Admittedly, del Toro's film is the sort you go to in order to watch giant monsters fight giant robots, and then incidentally stay for all of that character development and thematic complexity," the report noted.

Pacific Rims stars Charlie Hunnam, Diego Klattenhoff, Idris Elba,Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. It comes to U.S. theaters on Friday.
