Universal is courting David Yates for a reboot of the classic Scarface.

The Harry Potter director is rumored to be in talks to helm a new version of the mob film. Universal is currently ironing out the script for the crime drama, which has been described by Deadline as a reboot rather than a sequel or a remake

"Universal has been through a couple of drafts and now is very high on the current draft," a source said, according to Deadline. "The first stop is the director. This is before any conversations on talent or timing."

If the studio were to wrangle Yates for the production, he would bring with him not only his experience from four Harry Potter films, but also his knowledge of political thrillers (State of Play) and romantic dramas (The Girl in the Café).

Although Universal is keeping the writers' names under wraps, it appears that Scarface alum Martin Bregman will be producing the feature once again. Having worked on the 1983 Oliver Stone penned film, Bregman is now tasked with bringing a new vision to the iconic story.

Scarface was first released in 1932 and was based on the eponymous novel by Armitage Trail. Originally staring Paul Muni, Al Pacino later took the lead role in the 1983 version.
