Writer/director Robert Rodriguez is revisiting his popular children's film franchise Spy Kids with a new film set to stream on Netflix.

As reported by Deadline, Rodriguez - as per most of his projects - will write, direct, and produce the new feature-length film, which will be the fifth installment in the Spy Kids franchise.

This film will be introducing fans to an entirely new family of spies. Cast to star in the new family adventure will be Gina Rodriguez of Jane the Virgin fame, and Zachary Levi of Shazam!, playing the undercover parents. The titular Spy Kids will be played by Everly Carganilla, who made her debut in Yes Day, along with newcomer Connor Esterson

The Spy Kids franchise, which has been around since 2001, tells the story of spies who inevitably have to be saved by their children - who are only just finding out of their parents' globe trotting exploits - using all the high-tech gadgets at their disposal.

A hit with kids, the film spawned three more features, as well as a Netflix animated series.

The new Netflix film is going to also be produced by Spyglass and Skydance, with co-writer Max Racer working with Rodriguez on the screenplay. This comes on the heels of the streaming giant trying to expand its all-audience brand, an effort which has spawned films such as The Adam Project starring Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner's Yes Day, Slumberland, and the sequel to the Millie Bobby Brown film Enola Holmes

Guess it will only be a matter of time before Robert Rodriguez brushes off The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl for a new generation of kids - but let's not get our hopes up.
