Director James Gunn reveals his real feelings on a recurring Marvel Joke from "Guardians of the Galaxy" that turned into a long-running internet meme.

James Gunn started his role in Marvel Studios as the director for "Guardians of the Galaxy" in 2014, and later on, the sequel "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" in 2017. During the San Diego Comic-con, Marvel announced a third movie, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" with the trailer shown exclusively to event attendees.

With the third installment of the film franchise currently underway, a fan tagged the "GOTG" director on Twitter to reference a running joke on the upcoming film. The joke, involving the character Drax who claims to have the ability to be invisible, although unsuccessfully, has been referenced in "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Thor: Love and Thunder".

In response to the fan, director James Gunn reveals that the internet meme has grown "repetitive" and even expressed his regret in creating the joke in the first place.

"Between the daily barrage of repetitive invisible jokes about John Cena in addition [to] the ones about Dave [Bautista], I almost regret making the joke in the first place." The "Guardians of the Galaxy" director tweeted.

Additionally, other fans express their understanding of Gunn's sentiments on the joke, to which they asked in the replies if the "daily barrage" of memes felt similar to repetitive interview questions. Gunn responded that new questions were a nice change of pace for him.

"Yes, the same questions over and over for weeks. When a journalist comes in with a different take/questions, I can't tell you what a nice feeling it is." The director tweeted in response.

Not the Only Thing He Regrets

Despite his successful Marvel projects, James Gunn is also known to have been fired from his director role at one point in his career. In July 2018, Disney and Marvel severed ties with the 56-year-old director due to resurfacing old tweets where he made controversial takes on rape and pedophilia during the height of the #MeToo movement.

However, after expressing his apologies on Twitter and support from several Marvel stars, Disney rehired him to direct "Guardians of the Galaxy 3". Gunn had also directed the DC film "The Suicide Squad" for Warner Bros.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will see the return of actors Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, and Zoe Saldaña. The film is set to release on May 5, 2023.
