A sequel for the 2000 psychological thriller American Psycho in the form of a television spin-off is in the works produced by FX in collaboration with Lionsgate TV.

The film was based on the Bret Easton Ellis' controversial 1980s novel about Patrick Bateman, an investment banker who is a sexual predator and moonlights as a serial killer. Christian Bale played the role of Bateman in the film, which also starred Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Reese Witherspoon and Chloe Sevigny. American Psycho was directed by Mary Harron, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner.

The TV series will be set decades after the events in the book, fastwording from the late 1980's to present day. Fans will see Bateman in his fifties and with a new apprentice.

This is FX's official description:

"In the new drama series, iconic serial killer Patrick Bateman, now in his mid-50's but as outrageous and lethal as ever, takes on a protégé in a sadistic social experiment who will become every bit his equal - a next generation American Psycho."

The project will be written by Stefan Jaworski and co-produced by FX and Lionsgate TV. The latter's brother company, Lionsgate Films, was behind the American Psycho feature film.

Allison Shearmu, Jaworski and Ed Pressman are executive producers.

A direct-to-video sequel, American Psycho 2, starring Mila Kunis and directed by Morgan J. Freeman was released in 2002.
