Following news that Will Smith will play the lead in the upcoming sci-fi film Selling Time, it was recently revealed that one of two scripts penned for the Independence Day sequel have been written with the actor in mind for a starring role.

While there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Smith's part in the Independence Day follow-up, director Roland Emmerich seems to be leaning toward a yes. Emmerich told Indiewire currently two scripts were being considered for the film, one of which includes Smith's name.

When the publication prodded him about prospects of the script featuring Smith's character making the final cut, Emmerich sounded positive. "It's looking good [for the version with Smith]," he said.

Smith was in talks to reprise his role as Captain Steve Hiller in the upcoming sequels of Independence Day, Emmerich revealed in a September interview with Digital Spy.

Emmerich will be directing both Independence Day Forever Part 1 and Part 2, the first of which is set for release in July 2015. He puts in question his initial statement earlier this year, which confirmed that Smith will not be coming on board for the sequels.

"I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen," Emmerich said in an interview.

Talking to New York Daily in June, Emmerich also said Smith would not be joining the cast for the sequels "because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name."

"It would be too much," the German director said. "We have like maybe half of the people that you would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new."

That same month Smith told Digital Spy he was not interested in doing blockbuster films anymore: "I think I'm going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices."

It has been confirmed that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will be reprising their roles in the sequel of Independence Day.

In other Smith related news, the actor has been confirmed as the lead of the supernatural thriller, Selling Time. The film follows the story of a man who is given a chance to relive the worst day of his life in exchange for seven years off his life expectancy.

The script was initially written by former DreamWorks Television president Dan McDermott, who will rewrite the script as part of his original deal. John Davis will be producing the project through his Davis Entertainment banner along with Jennifer Klein.
