The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug star Richard Armitage suggested that everything would go wrong for the dwarves in the 2014 film in a recent interview with Empire.

The actor, who plays leader of the dwarves Thorin Oakenshield, also spoke to the publication about his character.

Thorin was sketched out as being a cantankerous, bad-tempered person in the Tolkien books, but in the film Thorin would be more likeable.

"I'm trying to keep him as well-rounded as I can, so that you don't just roll your eyes every time he opens his mouth because he's got something bad-tempered to say," Armitage said. "I'm really trying to find his sense of humor, despite the fact there's quite a big weight on his shoulders."

When the actor was asked about the dwarves' journey to reclaim their land, he revealed would be fraught with trouble and things won't quite work out in their favor.

"As the journey goes on, they keep getting themselves in bother. It's as if they are tripping towards the door. The dwarves break into two halves after Lake-town. Kili gets injured and has to remain behind so the dwarves break," he said"If it couldn't go any more wrong, it goes more wrong. When they get there, they have very little resource apart from the burglar."

In Desolation of Smaug, Bilbo and his troop of dwarves head toward the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their homeland while Thorin encourages them to fight Smaug the Dragon (Benedict Cumberbatch). Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) plays a key role in the film and the character will be reprised in the next installment, There and Back Again. Legolas will also feature in the last film of the trilogy but the nature of his role, which could also just be a cameo, has not been confirmed.

The film also features Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), who can shift between the form of a man and bear.
