Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Andrew Garfield may not play Peter Parker in all four of the franchise's films.

In a recent interview with Yahoo while promoting the film, Garfield didn't say anything about committing to the fourth film, slated for release in May 2018.

"I mean I'm under contract for another one after this...as far as a fourth one? That's not anything to do with me," the actor said.

Director Marc Webb also admitted he may not return for a fourth film either, saying, "We did think about these movies from the very beginning as a series of movies...really a trilogy to be totally frank."

If Garfield and Webb both depart the franchise after the third film, hitting theaters in May 2016, they would only be involved with the franchise for the same amount of time that original Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi were.

Maguire reportedly quit the franchise back in 2010 after producers wanted the script to take the Peter Parker character back to high school. Raimi was also reportedly against the new direction the script had taken.

The Amazing Spider-Man reboots, starring Garfield in the title role, did in fact go back to Peter Parker's high school days and featured the hero's first love, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), instead Mary Jane Watkins.

Regardless of his commitment to another Spider-Man movie, Garfield assured fans that the newest installment will not disappoint.

"I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn't on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air-How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through," he said. "Now we could say, 'who is this guy?' How can we best serve Spider-Man?"

Webb also assured that the movie would be an improvement from the first film, stating that he had more creativity as a writer this time around.

"You know the first time we had to deal with the origin story which was fun, but tricky. This time around the flood gates opened for all of us," he said. "We got to explore things that just hadn't been explored cinematically before. Whether it's Electro you know, or more with the story with Gwen."

Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrives in theaters May 2, 2014. It stars Emma Stone as Gwen, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Paul Giamatti as The Rhino and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn.
