Rumors about Apple's upcoming flagship devices, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, have been contradictory as of late. While the idea of a dual camera module was speculated a few months ago, the feature was alleged to have been removed by Apple. This is the same with the rumored smart connectors, which have been appearing and disappearing from leaks and renders over the months.

While the confusion about the rumored features has been quite notable, a recent leak that emerged has finally made sense of all the discrepancy. As it turns out, the contrasting images from several leaks and rumors that have emerged over the months were showing renders of two devices, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

Thus, the renders which showed a smartphone that is nigh-identical to the iPhone 6S, without a smart connector and with a single camera module, were showing the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. On the other hand, the leaks which featured dual cameras and a smart connector was showing the iPhone 7 Plus.

Over the past few years, Apple has slowly made it a point to make the Plus models far more robust than their 4.7-inch counterparts. During the iPhone 6 generation, the Plus model boasted a better screen, and during the following year, the 6S Plus was equipped with a far better camera. This year, however, it seems like Apple is really putting some distance between its two iPhone 7 models.

Of course, the leaks are only showing the external differences between the two iPhone 7 handsets. According to rumors, the iPhone 7 Plus would feature far better specs than its smaller counterpart, with a rumored 3GB of RAM and a larger, better battery. Indeed, with the difference in features and power, Apple seems to be building up the iPhone 7 as the firm's mid-range device.

With the release of the iPhone SE and the seemingly huge gap in features between the two iPhone 7 models, a number of fans are speculating that Apple is actually going for a three-pronged approach this year, with the SE being the entry-level device, the 7 as the mid-range smartphone, and the 7 Plus as the flagship unit.

Overall, Apple seems to be gearing up for an aggressive iPhone campaign this year.
