Sad news out of Hollywood on Sunday. Oscar winning actor William Hurt has passed away at the age of 71. Announced by his son Will, the cause of death was terminal prostate cancer that had infected the bone. Hurt was diagnosed with the disease back in May of 2018.

Born March 20, 1950, William Hurt spent his college years attending The Julliard School of Acting's drama department where he studied alongside Robin Williams and Christopher Reeves. He later joined the Circle Repertory Company in 1977, where he performed to great acclaim.

In his career spanning back to the late 1970's, Hurt received several nominations and awards including Best Actor Oscar for his performance of Luis Molina in the film Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and a Best Supporting Actor nod for A History of Violence (2006), Best Actor in a Leading Role in Children of a Lesser God (1986) and Broadcast News (1987). Most recently, Marvel fans got to see him play the role of General "Thunderbolt" Ross in several MCU films. One of last roles is on the upcoming series Pantheon alongside Paul Dano and Aaron Eckhart

Not only was he a brilliant actor, Hurt always worked with directors matching his quiet intensity as a performer. Established and up and comers the likes of Lawrence Kasden, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, Nora Ephron, M. Night Shyamalan, and the Russo Brothers, just to name a few.

William Hurt's passing is a terrible blow to the world of acting and his legacy will live on through the copious performances he captivated audiences with for decades. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.
