Amy Schumer revealed the health issue she kept to herself for years.

Schumer has been showing nothing but her positive side as a comedian. But behind her smiles and jokes lie a tragic health disorder that she has been suffering for years.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 40-year-old comedian opened up about her struggles as she deals with a disorder called trichotillomania for years.

According to NHS, trichotillomania - or trich - occurs when a person feels an intense urge to pull their hair out to feel a sense of relief. People with the disorder tend to pull their hair out whenever a stressful event occurs. The disorder is reportedly chronic but can be managed by a number of therapies and medications.

Schumer revealed that she has been struggling with it for years and that she once even had to wear a wig to cover her hair loss.

"I think everybody has a big secret, and that's mine. And I'm proud that my big secret only hurts me, but it's been what I've carried so much shame about for so long," she told the outlet on Friday.

The actress detailed that her trich first popped out when her dad declared bankruptcy after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It worsened when her mother left his father for her best friend's dad.

Unfortunately, the disease continued through her adulthood - and it is something she still struggles with.

Amy Schumer Expresses Worry About Her Son

Since the condition can be genetic, she reportedly feels anxious and worried that her son, Gene, might have it, too. Amid her fears, she hopes that her decision to talk about it would provide comfort to people who are having the same issue.

"I really don't want to have a big secret anymore. And I thought putting it in there would be good for me to alleviate some of my shame and maybe, hopefully, help others alleviate some of theirs, too," she said.

Her love for Gene resonated with the advice she gave to her friends, including Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Cera.

Recently, Schumer told People that she has been sharing parenting advice with everyone close to her heart. According to the actress, she told them that being a parent is about falling, comparing it to a stand-up comedy.

Still, she commended her friends for doing great in taking care of their kids since they are "clear, natural parents."
