Writer/director James Gunn is known for bringing his ability to blend wacky characters with heartfelt narratives, making him one of the most innovative creatives Hollywood has seen in quite some time. His take on The DCEU The Suicide Squad launched a wildly popular spin-off of John Cena's Peacemaker character for HBO Max, while his Guardian's of the Galaxy franchise remains one of the most popular parts of the MCU. And the accolades don't end there for Gunn.

Busy at work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn took to Twitter recently to announce the film has broken a record held by another movie for over 20 years.

"Just heard from our makeup folks at [Legacy Effects] that yesterday [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3] officially passed the World Record for 'the most makeup appliances created for a single production' (surpassing The Grinch). Congrats, guys! Thanks for keeping practical effects alive!"

The record for 'the most makeup appliances for a single production' is quite an honor considering the amount of CGI effects which have sadly gone on to replace practical effects and makeup either to save money or time. The MCU has been CG effects heavy for many of its productions, though Gunn has always seemed to be the pioneer who tried to keep it old school. Remember that he got his start doing low budget productions with NYC based production company Troma Entertainment, who pride themselves on using cheap practical effects. Gunn even confirmed on Twitter that the choice to use practical or computer effects is "100%" his to make with GotG.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters some time in 2023.
