Madonna has been working on her biopic for years and they're still in their early stages. However, they are almost one step closer to starting production as they offered a role to an iconic actress.

According to sources who confirmed spoke to Variety, "Inventing Anna" star Julia Garner has been tapped to play the role of the queen of pop.

Insiders revealed that the actress is currently the top choice among a dozen candidates. She has also been speculated to play the role and the frontrunner for months.

Another source confirmed that Garner's team is considering and expected to accept the role.

Despite the ongoing rumors, neither Madonna nor Julia Garner has confirmed whether the latter will play the character or not.

According to the outlet, the film will be released under Universal Pictures. It will tackle the real-life story of Madonna during her early days in the music industry.

The script was obtained by Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley after multiple studios bid on it.

Amy Pascal serves as producer.

There are still no updates regarding the other cast members, but previously rumored actresses who would play Madonna include Alexa Demie of "Euphoria" and Odessa Young.

Singers like Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha were also rumored to be one of the choices.

The outlet noted that the audition process for the role was grueling as the movie requires its lead to be a skilled dancer and singer.

In an interview with the Associated Press last year, Madonna revealed that she has her eyes on "Midsommar" star Florence Pugh.

The "Material Girl" songstress said the actress is "definitely up there on the list, if she'll have me."

Pugh is fitting for the role because aside from being an actress, she is also a singer who goes by the name Flossie Rose.

The "Don't Worry Darling" star posts song covers on her official YouTube account.

However, despite Madonna's personal choice, many fans disagree with the music legend, saying many stars could do better than Pugh.

Other users also insist Miley Cyrus or Paris Jackson take the role.

Upon announcing her biopic or "visual autobiography," Madonna said she wanted to convey the "incredible journey that life as taken on me as an artist, a musician, a dancer."
