Fans of the popular Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Air Bender have a lot to celebrate. It has been announced that Avatar Studios are busy at work on not one, not two, but THREE animated Avatar films.

The series, which ran for three seasons from 2005 to 2008, told the story of a young monk named Aang, who was destined to become the next Avatar, a being who could control the four elements of fire, wind, water, and earth, and use his powers to bring peace to the warring nations of each element.

This popular anime-style show, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, also garnered a huge fan following and a spin-off with The Legend of Korra

Back in 2021, DiMartino and Konietzko spoke with Entertainment Weekly

"With this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums."

Well, that day has finally come.

The first of the films will be directed by Avatar veteran Lauren Montgomery, who worked on the original series.

President of Animation and Development at Paramount Animation Ramsey Naito was more than elated to discuss the future of the franchise:

"As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we're keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical."

Even with the tarnish left on the property as a whole after the disastrous live-action M. Night Shyamalan's critically panned (and boring as hell) attempt at bringing the series to the big screen, the love for this series has perservered, even getting a live-action series which is coming to Netflix (though it is not affiliated with Avatar Studios.)

There is no release date for the animated features at this time.
