The release of stills from an upcoming Lifetime film based on the terrible murder of Gabby Petito coincides with the FBI's confirmation that Brian Laundrie admitted to killing the budding social media star in his personal notebook. The latter information leaked and while the police was frustrated, they could no longer do anything about it.

In the notebook, it was revealed that the whole murder was set off by an accident, wherein Gabby Petito was seriousy hurt. Laundrie allegedly felt extremely pained for his then fiancee and ended her life as a form of merciful killing. He instantly regretted what he done and vowed to commit suicide too, so his body can be eaten by animals. He made true of that promise.

On Thursday, "The Gabby Petito Story" was first observed filming in the mountains outside Salt Lake City, Utah.

In a few scenes, director Thora Birch can be seen directing the actors playing Petito and Laundrie.

Burch will also portray Petito's mother in the film. The complete cast list has not yet been announced.

The photographs depict the two engaging in a heated fight before Laundrie rushes away and enters the white van he would later drive home alone after murdering his lover Petito.

As Petito was murdered by Laundrie just last fall, many have criticized Lifetime's choice to press forward with a documentary about her tragedy so soon.

"I can't believe this even needs to be said but we do NOT need a Gabby Petito murder movie. We don't," tweeted one critic.

Another said, "Hollywood is making a movie about the death of Gabby Petito?!?! Unreal. Tone deaf. But I'm not surprised. Hollywood can't come up with anything original these days."

As there are already images from the real film, this indicates that it was shot much before the alleged leak of information. Will the film portray "the truth?"

However, the network may have had good intentions, as the clip would be included in its Stop Violence Against Women public affairs effort.

Petito, a resident of Long Island who disappeared during a road trip with Laundrie, was discovered on September 19 strangled in a campground near the Grand Tetons.

After her death, Laundrie vanished, sparking a nationwide manhunt. Later, he was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near a Florida marsh, where the FBI recently located his notebook.

"I ended her life," he said, saying that Petito, who was 22 years old, fell and severely injured herself.

Petito's mother, Nichole Schmidt, filed a wrongful death case against the curator of Laundrie's estate in Florida last month. She is claiming damages of $30,000.
