Winona Ryder has admitted that breaking up with Johnny Depp mentally broke her.

She struggled to take care of herself' following her 1993 separation with Johnny Depp, adding that Michelle Pfeiffer was there for her during this harrowing time.

The 50-year-old actress compared her condition to her 1999 character Susanna Kaysen, who spends 18 months in a psychiatric facility after attempting suicide.

She made the confession to complement a stunning cover shoot for the July 2022 digital issue of Harper's Bazaar, which features her in a black blazer suit.

She revealed to the magazine that the breakup was her "Girl, Interrupted" reality. I recall, in the 1994 drama, "The House of the Spirits," portraying a character who is ultimately tortured in a Chilean prison.

"I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face [from the shoot], and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl," she said. "Would you be treating this girl like you're treating yourself?" I remember looking at myself and saying, "This is what I'm doing to myself inside." Because I just wasn't taking care of myself," she added.

Winona went on to add that Michelle, her Age of Innocence co-star, promised her that the tough phase will "pass," but she "couldn't hear it."

She said that the whole ordeal became something special in her life, but she knows that to someone younger who grew up with social media, she would not make any sense.

Reminiscing on the 'cruel' tabloid culture of the early 2000s, Winona also admitted that what happened to her at the time almost brought her to her knees.

In 2001, the film actor made headlines after being caught shoplifting from the Beverly Hills location of Saks Fifth Avenue and then being found guilty.

On being targeted by the press amid the scandal, the "Stranger Things" star said, "I definitely retreated. I was in San Francisco. But I also wasn't getting offers. I think it was a very mutual break."

In 2001, her arrest for theft in a Beverly Hills department store startled Hollywood.

Winona was ultimately found guilty of stealing approximately £4,000 worth of designer goods from a prestigious department shop.

On December 12, she was convicted guilty of grand theft and vandalism, but not of second-degree burglary at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills.

During her shopping excursion, she purchased a number of products but stole so many more.

A surveillance video clip viewed by the jurors revealed that she spent more than one and a half hours at the store, roaming around and choosing out fashionable items.

When she crouched down and placed numerous hair items and socks into a hat she was carrying, she drew the attention of Saks' security chief Kenneth Evans

Following her sentence, the "Girl, Interrupted"  actress had a few years of peace and quiet, but she could not give up acting for good.

Now in a loving relationship with her long-term partner Scott Mackinlay Hahn, she raved about the couple's "connection on so many levels."

Winona claimed that she loves' the fact that her 51-year-old boyfriend, a fashion designer, has so many things in common with her despite him not even part of the acting world.
