Spain's King Felipe ‘Crushed And Destroyed’ Over Queen Letizia’s Alleged Affair With Ex-Brother-In-Law: 'He Wants Out'
King Felipe of Spain is reportedly in shambles over the alleged affair between his wife Queen Letizia and her ex-brother-in-law Jaime Del Burgo.
Journalist and author Jaime Peñafiel's newly released book, "Letizia's Silences," details the emotional torment and "tests" Letizia would reportedly put Felipe through, including "frequent traveling" to get a rise out of the king.
"It was a strategy, because that absence was a real torment for the very much in love Felipe, who conceived distance as the worst of evils, coming to understand [Spanish poet] Lope de Vega when he said that 'the beginning of absence is like the end of life,' " Peñafiel wrote, per the 'New York Post.'
Once Queen Letizia, 51, understood that King Felipe had "total love" for her, she reportedly returned to Spain "bossy and manipulative." Peñafiel wrote that King Felipe was aware of the queen's alleged affair in "real time," via her bodyguards.
The 91-year-old author wrote that the king was "crushed and destroyed" by the queen's alleged "betrayal" before being "plunged into hell." The alleged affair between the queen and Del Burgo carried on for years after the royal wedding, according to the book, and now the king reportedly "wants out."
Del Burgo, entrepreneur and son of former politician Jaime Ignacio Del Burgo, was married to the queen's sister, Telma Ortiz, from 2012 to 2014, per 'The Post.'
Peñafiel's first book, 'Letizia & I', released in January, detailed alleged secrets that could shake the stability of the queen and king's marriage. Shortly after, the author reportedly parted from 'El Mundo' newspaper after 20 years due to the written allegations. However, Del Burgo doubled down on his claims.
Per 'The Post,' he claimed that Letizia visited him the night before she tied the knot with the king.
"When we met, she took hold of my hand and asked me why I had never asked her to marry me," he claimed on her behalf. "Obviously, I didn't reply. I encouraged her as best I could. The last thing she said to me before we said goodbye to each other in that restaurant was a request: 'Never leave me.' "
Despite the turbulent union between King Felipe, 56, and the queen of Spain, the two are reportedly keeping a unified front. Wednesday marked the couple's 20th wedding anniversary.
The royal duo share two daughters together: Princess Leonor, 18, and Infanta Sofia, 17.
