Nick Cannon defended Miley Cyrus' controversial performance at the 2013 Video Music Awards on Aug. 25, saying he supports the pop singer and that she should twerk as much as she wants to.

Cyrus got close and personal on stage with Robin Thicke when they performed Blurred Lines. The 20-year-old, wearing a nude-colored pair of shorts and bra, twerked in front of Thicke by putting her rear end in front of his body and shaking it for the crowd.

Cannon said Cyrus has every right to twerk and following the performance, Perez Hilton quoted him saying,  "It was very entertaining. I appreciate her twerking. I think it's her prerogative...twerk away."

The America's Got Talent host also had a suggestion for Cyrus to help her improve her twerking skills: "I am the first to donate to the Ass for Miley Foundation. If you're gonna twerk, you gotta have something back there to twerk."

Not completely criticizing the performance, rapper Kendrick Lamar said, "It was shocking, very shocking."

Cyrus responded to the backlash she received in a recent interview with MTV, saying she does not care what critics think of her performance. She added that people are "over-thinking" the act and making it a bigger deal than it really is.

"I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times. How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?" she said. "You know what's going to happen. Madonna's done it, Britney's done it, every VMAs performance, anyone that performed, that's what you're looking for, you're looking to make history. Me and Robin, the whole time said, you know we've got to make history right now."
