Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 47. Yauch, who was known as MC has been battling cancer for the last three years after his initial diagnosis in 2009. A tumor was found in his salivary gland.


The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. But Yauch did not attend the ceremony due to his illness. The band hand not performed together since 2009.


The Beastie boys were formed in 1979 with members Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horowitz. They were recognized for their punk music and later recognized as a hip-hop group.


They released their first major album in 1986.  


Their first major album release came in 1986 and was entitled "Licensed to Ill". By 2010, they had sold 22 million albums in the United States and 40 million albums worldwide.


In 2009, the group released digitally remastered deluxe editions of their albums Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.


The Beastie Boys are the third hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group  helped pioneer rap/hip-hop. The group was inducted by LL Cool J and Chuck D, with Chuck calling the Beastie Boys "one of the greatest live acts in music."
