Miley Cyrus wrote a letter to her ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth apologising for "acting so mad" and pushing him away, a source reportedly told The Sun.

The 20-year-old Wrecking Ball singer ended her engagement to Hemsworth, 23, earlier this year and confirmed the split via their reps in September. The couple, who has matching tattoos, met on the movie set of 2010's The Last Song amd got engaged in May 2011.

Cyrus' wild antics garnering media attention put a strain on their relationship and Hemsworth was fed up of the publicity she was receiving, Enstars previously reported. Other sources said Cyrus called off the engagement because she believes he was unfaithful.

Now, almost two months apart, Cyrus attempted to reconcile with the Hunger Games: Catching Fire star by apologising in a letter to him. She had originally planned on penning a love song to show Hemsworth how sorry she is but decided to keep things private instead.

"As time has gone on and the anger subsided, Miley has really started to feel the pain of the split," an insider told the publication. "She thought about writing some songs, but then decided why not write a letter to Liam to tell him exactly how she feels. Miley admitted to Liam she has pushed him away and said sorry for acting so mad."

Cyrus is reportedly willing to put her past struggles with Hemsworth behind then and start over again.

"Miley says in her letter she still loves Liam deeply and has asked him to meet up," the insider added. "It could be for closure or it could be to start again, but she just wants to see him and talk things through."

Both stars have been romantically linked to other people since their split.

A day after his separation from Cyrus was announced, Hemsworth was photographed kissing Mexican model-actress Eiza Gonzalez. Two sources then confirmed to E! News that Cyrus and Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden were making out at a Halloween party.
