Guardians of the Galaxy has yet to hit theaters but there is already talk of a sequel.

Marvel Studios meticulously plans out its releases far in advance, and the Star-Lord may pilot his way back into theaters during 2016.

The odd child of Marvel's Phase Two grouping, Guardians is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to not feature a member of the Avengers. While SHIELD's super powered collective dot the plot of the studio's major capstone films, it appears Iron Man and his ilk will be conspicuously absent from several upcoming films.

However, this does not mean these films cannot sore to the same heights as the Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor franchises. At least Marvel clearly thinks this if they are ordering both a 2016 sequel and a Disney XD animated series for the upcoming James Gunn feature, according to JoBlo.

This would place Guardians 2 in Marvel's Phase Three schedule, for which only 2015's Ant-Man has been officially announced. While either Captain America or Thor (or both) will most likely return for a third installment, the rest of Phase Three could be Avengers deprived as the studio introduces new characters like Doctor Strange or the Black Panther.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on Aug. 1. In the meantime, fans can get a taste of the upcoming film by watching the Guardians' mid-credit scene from Thor: The Dark World (see video below).
