It seems like Ghostbusters 3 has been gestating for a century, and every time there is any progress on the project, it seems to take two steps back.

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill Approached For Ghostbusters 3

However, on Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that director Paul Feig is the frontrunner to help the project, and that he has expressed interest in working on it.

Feig is best known for directing films such as Bridesmaids and The Heat, so perhaps it is not surprising that the report also indicates that Ghostbusters 3 will now be a reboot focusing on female Ghostbusters. The indication has been that this movie would see the original Ghostbusters pass the torch to a new generation, and events since this project first came up have made that a necessity.

Dan Aykroyd To Reprise Role In Ghostbusters 3

Bill Murray has never shown any interest in returning for this project, and now Harold Ramis, who played Egon, has passed away, although Dan Aykroyd has been ridiculously enthused about the project along the way, so if and when Ghostbusters 3 becomes a reality, expect to see him.

With The Heat, and perhaps with his upcoming female spy movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Feig has pretty much made himself the man to direct any female centric action movie. If that's what Ghostbusters 3 is, and again it must be reiterated just how much this film has evolved over the past decade plus, Feig is an ideal choice. Of course, first he has to officially sign on, and then the film has to actually happen, but for now Ghostbusters 3 remains the project that won't die.
