Recently Mark Wahlberg suggested that Michael Bay would be coming back to direct Transformers 5, but Bay himself has kept quiet on the subject.

A Bumblebee Spin-off Is In The Works?

In fact that last we heard from the director hinted at him planning to move on from the franchise. But then the producers and chief writer have also recently hinted at Bay returning to direct the sequel for Age of Extinction. Still, most publications are taking this information with a pinch of salt until they hear the news from the horse's mouth.

In the chance that Bay ditches at the last minute there had been rumors about one of the director's mentees taking the baton from him. Earlier this year, speculation started to swirl about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles director Jonathan Liebesman taking on the role of director. Ninja Turtles was produced by Bay and the film is also stylistically similar to the Transformers franchise in someways.

Will Megan Fox Join The Age of Extinction Sequel?

So in choosing Liebesman to direct the fifth installment, the producers of the sequel of Age of Extinction might be ensuring that the film sticks to the imprint of the first movie and the franchise in general by getting a director whose work might bear some resemblance to that of Bay's.

It's always good to have a back up, but that being said we are still rooting for Bay's return. Most recently, Wahlberg strongly hinted at the fact that Bay will be coming back to direct Transformers 5 in a recent interview with Collider.

Wahlberg was specifically asked if he had any details on the development of the film. The actor stated that he didn't know much, but inadvertently slipped that Bay is very much on board, despite all the rumors about him ditching the franchise that had been swirling about.

"I don't. Just that Akiva [Goldsman] and those guys are starting to write and break stories, and stuff like that," he said. "But [Michael] Bay is in Malta shooting Benghazi, and I'm in New Orleans shooting Deepwater. We'll get together when he gets back."

Transformers: Age of Extinction hit theaters on June 27, 2014.
