Accio, Hogwarts acceptance letters! Thanks to video game developer Jam City, Harry Potter fans can go to the legendary Wizarding academy.

It was reported several months ago that video game developer Jam City received author J.K. Rowling's blessing to team up with Portkey Games and Warner Bros. Interactive to produce a Harry Potter-related video game that would take the franchise's devoted fans to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

However, there was a twist when Jam City revealed their video game. Fans would not be able to encounter Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, nor Draco Malfoy because of the game's time period. All players will be traveling back in time to see what Hogwarts students' life was like in the 1980s.

A Trailer Breakdown

The game's official trailer starts out with a quote from Hogwarts' legendary headmaster Albus Dumbledore following an owl flying into the night sky with the user's letter in hand. Viewers would encounter 3D wizards in a variety of activities such as receiving their wand, practicing wizard duels, and making either friends or adversaries along the way.

Fans also would briefly see several beloved Hogwarts faculty members that will be a part of the game, including Hagrid, Severus Snape, and Minerva McGonagall. The trailer ends with a close-up of Hogwarts' Castle, the game's official logo, and John Williams' iconic orchestral theme.

As of this story's publishing, a release date has not yet been confirmed for Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.

Friendly Family Competition

While Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will let players explore Hogwarts in its entirety, fans who want to participate in full on Wizarding battles might want to wait for another Harry Potter game that Pokémon Go developer Niantic is releasing.

Like Jam City, the video game company also received the blessing of Rowling, Portkey Games, and Warner Bros. Interactive to move forward with their project. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is expected to transform video game users into wizards and witches. Throughout their neighborhoods, gamers can fight their enemies by using some of the Harry Potter signature spells.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is expected to drop sometime this year.

Other Franchise News

In addition to Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery's release, the Harry Potter franchise is expected to have a significant 2018.

Warner Bros. Pictures gave its blessing to production company Tryangle Films regarding a fan film that they released. The film company released a 52-minute unofficial fan film called Voldemort: Origins of the Heir. The movie told the franchise's top villain origin story.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child's U.S. production team has announced that they will release tickets next month for its Broadway debut. Previews for the U.S. production are expected to begin on March 16, while the play will officially open on April 22 at New York City's Lyric Theatre.
