Twitter is celebrating its 6th birthday today and to commemorate the event the site released a sketch of the service as originally conceived by its founder Jack Dorsey.

The social networking site started in 2006 when Dorsey (@jack) made his first tweet: "Just setting up my twttr."

On the sketch on a pad, the site's name was not Twitter but "Status" and its web address was "my.stat.us."

But the overall concept was as simple to what the website looks like now.

Twitter now has more than 140 million active users and 340 million Tweets per day, the company said in a statement today.

Co-founders @ev (Evan Williams) and @biz (Biz Stone) created their first accounts on July 15, 2006. The service was first called "Twttr" until September 2006 when they added in the vowels.

"Without you, of course, there wouldn't be a Twitter. We mark our sixth birthday with you in mind, and celebrate your myriad ways of engaging, enjoying, and emoting on our platform," Twitter said in a statement today.

The site has been used by many celebrities around the world and has become an easy way to reach out to fans and vice versa.
