Although the media has been a big part of the British Royal Family for decades, not every action of its members is captured on camera. The late Prince Philip's kindness is not an exception as he did a heartwarming thing to a "very vulnerable" Prince William amid Princess Diana's death.

According to Express UK, the Duke of Edinburgh told Princes Harry and William that he would walk with them during the Princess of Wale's funeral.

A close friend of the late royal, Martin Palmer, debunked the rumors swirling at the time that it was not the Duke's decision to walk along with his grandchildren behind their mother's coffin.

He claims the late King Consort told him that he touched William's back to comfort him because he thought the cameras were not focusing on them.

"He comes in for criticism for that but it was not his choice, not his idea," he said.

Palmer, the co-founder of The Alliance of Religions and Conservation, said when the funeral car went under the Horseguards Parade arch, he turned to the Duke of Cambridge to comfort him.

"You've got to watch that moment and realise here is a grandfather who is trying to help his young, very vulnerable grandson struggle through this awful, awful moment," he added.

In addition, Palmer claims that Prince Philip knew how it felt to be a part of a "dysfunctional family," so he ensured that it wouldn't happen to his grandchildren.

A Broadcaster Backs Martin Palmer's Claims

According to Gyles Brandreth, it was not the Duke's idea to walk along with the two Princes, but their family had a long tradition of walking behind the Hearst.

Prince Philip was said to be not a part of the plan, but he asked Prince William, "if it would help I can walk alongside you."

The broadcaster said it was an "act of grandfatherly kindness."
