People tend to be drawn to works that are the opposite of how they feel. The past few years have been unquestionably strange and have plunged many people into serious mental spirals of anxiety and depression. Therefore, they turn to their favorite shows and movies for comfort. I Want You Back sought to give the world something new that would give the joyful spirit of the old. The director, Jason Orley, expressed:

"It was just wanting to make something that we hadn't seen in a while...that was like the feel good movie in a time that we just really need something that's - can make us laugh and comfort us in this sort of unexpected time that we're living in...These were the movies that I was watching...I was watching old movies the last two years, movies that I know the ending, movies that I know what's happening and that makes me feel good."

It has been so long since someone created a light-hearted, trope filled, feel-good rom-com. Fans of this genre will be immediately adding I Want You Back to the rotation. It will cure whatever is happening inside of you. Without question.

While the film is certainly a comforting rom-com, there is a level of reality within it that gives it a fresh, new life that other films in the genre often lack. Without giving anything away, the characters that Day and Slate play are complex and real. Also, neither of them are writers which, for everyone who considers themselves an avid watcher of rom-coms, we can all agree that we needed some fresh professions in the mix! Slate said of her character, Emma:

"It was a delight to play this character. She has some stuff to work on, so she's not, like, totally perfect, but her kindness to me is really perfect and her appetite, her just wanting to have a partner is also really delightful, and I think that's a really nice place to start from. "
