Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that Ghislaine Maxwell attended her daughter's 2010 wedding only as a "plus-one," not as a personal guest.

Clinton spoke to reporters after a six-hour closed-door deposition on February 26 at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center in New York.

The testimony was part of the House Oversight Committee's investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and his network of wealthy associates.

"She came as the plus-one, the guest of someone who was invited," Clinton said, referring to Maxwell's presence at Chelsea Clinton's wedding, USA Today reported.

She did not name the person who brought Maxwell.

The deposition came after the Republican-led committee threatened both Clinton and former President Bill Clinton with contempt of Congress if they refused to comply with subpoenas. Hillary Clinton testified February 26, and Bill Clinton was scheduled to appear the next day.

Hillary Clinton Says She 'Did Not Know Jeffrey Epstein'

Lawmakers, led by Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, say they want more details about how Epstein built his fortune and connections.

Comer said the panel also plans to ask about Epstein's donations to the Clinton Foundation and Maxwell's attendance at Chelsea Clinton's wedding.

Chelsea Clinton married Marc Mezvinsky on July 31, 2010, at Astor Courts Estate in Rhinebeck, New York. More than 400 guests attended the ceremony.

According to Newsweek, during her testimony, Hillary Clinton said she did not know Epstein and never flew on his private plane.

"I did not know Jeffrey Epstein," she told reporters. She also said she had no knowledge of the crimes committed by Epstein or Maxwell.

Maxwell, a former girlfriend of Epstein, was convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking minors and is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Epstein had previously been convicted in 2008 of soliciting prostitution from a minor. He died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Clinton criticized the committee's investigation, calling it a "fishing expedition." She questioned why more information has not been released by the Justice Department. "What is being held back? Who is being protected? And why the cover-up?" she asked.
