Gunn hopped on the Periscope bandwagon on Tuesday, using the new social media-broadcasting app to update fans on the progress of the Star-Lord sequel.

"I turned in my treatment. I'm going in to meet about it Friday and we will start working on the screenplay next week," Gunn said, according to Screen Rant, explaining that the script itself is quite far along, already crossing the 70-page threshold.

Marvel is fresh off the success of last August's breakout galactic hit, an unexpected blockbuster that left viewers clamoring for more. Despite this, Gunn's upcoming project has already raised a few eyebrows at the comic-book studio, garnering warnings that his plan to eschew pre-written cannon is too "risky."

"It's not really based on anything," Gunn informed the Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend podcast in early 2015. "The story for Guardians 2 is an original story that I came up with that I started working on actually while I was shooting Guardians 1, and it'll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill's father and who he is and what's going on with that."
